Baby loss information and support
Losing a baby is devastating - regardless of whether you experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, neonatal death, termination for medical reasons (TMFR), or molar and ectopic pregnancy.
Growing up in Trinidad, discussions about baby loss were almost silent. It was spoken in whispers as if saying it out loud would make it real or make others feel uncomfortable. But the thing is, it is real. That tiny person was there. Not acknowledging out loud or speaking about a loss can create feelings of shame, inadequacy and failure.
Quite often I would hear comments such as “Don’t worry, you can try again”, “You were only a couple of weeks pregnant” or “you already have a child”. While well-meaning, it minimized the loss and suffering that a woman was experiencing.
The tide is slowly changing and it’s significant to notice local newspapers across the Caribbean beginning to include articles of baby loss. However, there is still much work to be done. For example, easily accessible psychological and emotional support for those who've experienced a loss.
I’ve been reaching out to family and friends across the Caribbean to find out about what organizations/charities are available but this has proven to be a challenge. Please do reach out if you are aware of any so that I can update this list.
Sending love and light to anyone who’s been touched by loss.
